Hartford, Conn.
The CONNECTICUT CUP was born on August 18, 2002 when
the CTSC invited the NYC-TFC in Farmington to celebrate the
first birthday of CT State Subbuteo. Seven players battled in a
hot summer day and CTSC's Massimo Conturso achieved the
final victory.
This year, the Cup became ASA-sanctioned tournament and 19
were the table-footballers present in the Subbuteo Cathedral in
Trinity College, Hartford.
According to the ASA Rankings, the Top 8 US players were
divided into the four Groups: Gregg Deinhart and Nick Giffen in
Group A (of 4); Eric Walton and Massimo Conturso in Group B
(of 5); Rick Wilcox and Marco Silva in Group C (of 5); Jim
Taylor and Ryan Bak in Group D (of 5).
For travel/family reasons (it was Father's Day!), the event
didn't see any Mary Jane Consolation Tourney. The Top 2 of
each group met in the Quarterfinals ...with a few surprises.
In Group A, the astonishing Matthew Giffen defeated his
brother Nick and qualified to the second round for the first time
as A2!
In Group C, 1997 US Champion, Marco Silva, didn't get more
than a double 2-2 against CTSC's Eddie Davidson (who also tied
1-1 2002 National Champ, Rick Wilcox..) and Luis Silva. The
Portuguese from West Haven qualified to the Quarter finals as
C2!
In Group D, the Group of Death, Ryan Bak clinched the top
spot, but family duties forced him to step down and allowed
fellow CTSC members, Miguel Marques and Jim Taylor, to
advance respectively as D1 and D2.
The final victory went to ASA President, SSL's Eric Walton,
who defeated 2-1 the new National Champion, Gregg Deinhart,
while CTSC's Massimo Conturso beat 1-0 Rick Wilcox for the
first time ever to claim the 3rd rank.
