The 16 players and ASA members listed for the National Open were divided into 4 groups of four. According to the ASA Rankings, the four seeds were:
1. Gregg Deinhart (WTSL) 2. Eric Walton (SSL) 3. Rick Wilcox (WTSL) 4. Jim Taylor (CTSC)
The tournament was structured to have every single participant playing until the very end with finals for each of the 16 ranks available. The result was a 10-hour competition on 7 pitches that started at 10am and ended at 8pm, when Gregg Deinhart reclaimed the National Crown for his 6th personal US Championship (8th straight for WTSL).
