Farmington, CT
Well, it was in the air.
Six players, including U12 extraordinaire
Frank Jr Silva, showed up at the Farmington
Police Department for the 7th annual ASA
Connecticut Cup. It was the lowest ever
attendance to an ASA/FISTF event held in
our state since the SCC establishment in
2001.
It has been a great ride. Seven people got
together at Hartford's Trinity College in
December 2002 for the exciting takeoff.
The peak was reached when 31 ASA
members crowded the local Community
Center for the 2nd SCC hosted US nationals.
In between, 16 other tournaments and a
steady average presence of 13.6.
Since Farmington 2006, single digit
attendance has become the norm as it
happened already 4 out of 8 times.
Despite these low numbers, this season's
Connecticut Cup saw quality games with a
great amount of goals: 63 in 20 matches,
3.15 per game, including the first (unofficial)
U12 championship between the young Silva
(9 years old) and Julia Conturso (7). Silva
won 3-2 and denied the Conturso Family an
unusual double..
With many top players missing (Jim Taylor,
Luis Silva, Sergio Sensini and 2-time
champion Andrea Gasparini), the expected
tournament dynamics were confirmed as
current league table's top 3 (Conturso and
the Marques Brothers) qualified to the final
stage, leaving the Silvas and Obi-Wan Mishtal
battling in the Connecticut's Mary Jane, the
Nutmeg Cup.
At then end, it was Massimo Conturso that
grabbed top honors for his 2nd consecutive
title, 4th overall, again versus Miguel
Marques, this time in overtime.
