For the first time ever, the Old Firm was decided at the shootouts and the series is now tied (6-6), first time since November 2007. It was an exciting edition that Andrea & Massimo managed to take to extra time with a goal each in the final minutes. After no golden goal in OT, the shots awarded the title to MSC, thanks to Paul's impressive shootouts winning streak.

The weekend
The youngest club in the US put up a
solid show for the annual national
championships.
MSC alumnus, Daniel Cranston and his
Towson SC were the winners of this
year's edition, both on and off the
pitch. The venue, right on the Towson
University campus, was top notch: a
spacious and bright conference room
with wooden floor and the weekend
went through flawless. Daniel himself
claimed both individual events,
becoming the fourth player to clinch
multiple national titles after Gregg
Deinhart, Rick Wilcox and Zach
Walker.
SCC attendees, Andrea Gasparini &
Massimo Conturso (top seed #3)
escaped the traps in the draw as many
were the top players unseeded this
year. They qualified as runner-ups in
their respective groups, behind
eventual semifinalists Daniel Cranston
& Stuart Russell. Forced to play the
barrage round, the two Italians went
through and qualified in the same half
of the bracket. Winning the next round
would have put them in front of each
other and guaranteed a SCC player in
the final. Unfortunately, both fell short
to expert players such as Paul Eyes
(Andrea, 1-2) and Rick Wilcox
(Massimo, 0-1) and the chance to
repeat their 2006 feat vanished.
Sunday’s ASA Towson Open was
slightly more benevolent with them.
The not-ASA-sanctioned team event
saw once again Connecticut (for the
occasion teamed up with Philly’s
Zunino & Weber) succumbing to a
Maryland crew, after the defeat in the
North Atlantic Challenge Cup. In the
FA Cup style individual open, Massimo
faced Veterans’ national champion Paul
Eyes (4-1 to Deinhart in Saturday’s
Vets final) at the first round and lost
after shootouts. He eventually claimed
the consolation bracket title. Andrea
instead had a good run, won the first
two rounds but his quest ended in the
semifinals against the U19 national
champion Stuart Russell (4-0 to Byung
Kim in Sunday’s U19 final).
Nevertheless, the weekend can be
considered a positive experience for
our players. Andrea had the chance to
play competitive table soccer in
preparation of his trip to Sicily for the
FISTF World Cup. Massimo witnessed
the comeback of many great players
like Marco Silva and left Maryland with
a renewed sense of direction for the
ASA and its Board.
