11th League Friday
July 25, 2008 in Wallingford
Wallingford, CT

The evening wasn't promising more than
the usual 'menage a trois' in Wallingford,
when the two Frank Silva showed up
looking for some subbuteo action. The 11th
League Friday of the season took form, and
it was one to remember.

Miguel Marques won his 4th league
tournament, and tied Massimo Conturso for
the most victories as well as for the table
leadership. Entering the last month of the
2007-08 campaign, the two State
Champions are paired off at altitude 68
points, 15 ahead of Rick Marques who's still
3rd despite having missed the last 2 league
events.

The Wallingford club meeting saw yet
another enthusiastic participation by the
young Frank Jr Silva, at his 4th league cap.
Frank is showing great progress and scored
4 personal-record-breaking goals that
echoed his first ever win from last week
(2-0 Pat Ciccarelli).

With Marques & Conturso obtaining similar
scores against the Silvas, it was Jim Taylor to
become the pointer on the scale. In the
opening game, a rusty Conturso was easily
harnessed, and Taylor put in his pocket a
scoreless match and a precious point.

But the Scotsman couldn't stop the
Portuguese in the 4th round (2-1 Marques),
and Massimo flicked off the big match with a
2 points deficit & a mission: to win.
The game was a 'classico' affair, and Miguel
looked in control with a series of corner
flicks in the first half.
But it was in the last 2 1/2 minutes that the
match could have gone the Italian way.
First, Miguel made a huge save on a shot
from his left. Then, it was the buzzer that
denied Massimo a clear chance after a quick
spare goalie counterattack that followed
Miguel's corner flick in the last seconds of
the game.

August, with its possible 3 league
matchdays (two Fridays + one Sunday), will
be hotter than ever in Connecticut.
