| 2009 Connecticut State Championship January 3, 2010 in Wallingford |
Wallingford, Conn.
With the unnameable decade behind,
the Club relived a day of its past glory,
when members used to crowd the club
house and matches were hard fought, as
the luxury of 6 players animated a
Connecticut's gelid Sunday for the 2009
State Championship. Many were the
absents, including Jim Taylor, Luis
Silva and Frank Silva. However, the
always-present Massimo & Miguel
welcomed back a few other club mates
that have been missing the subbuteo
action lately: Rick Marques (last
appearance: Nov 09), Ostap Mishtal
(May 09), Mike Eylward (Feb 09),
Sergio Sensini (Jan 09).
There was a bit of holiday hangover in
the air, and the traditional animosity of
glory days was replaced by a more
relaxed approach. Nevertheless, the
intensity of the games grew with the
elapsing of time and culminated in very
well played playoff matches.
A year after his last appearance, Sergio
had the personal satisfaction of winning
the consolation tournament with a 2-0
victory over Ostap Mishtal. Let's hope it
will not take 12 more months for him to
show up again: his presence and his
skills add great value to the club
meetings.
Rick & Massimo didn't have the time of
adjusting to the competition's
atmosphere as the draw put one in front
the other in Round 1. The match was
open and exciting and the Italian was
lucky enough to claim victory with a
last 10 seconds goal.
The two 2007 finalists didn't know they
were going to encore the excitement a
few matches later. Sure enough, in the
playoffs Rick showed more
determination than his brother Miguel,
who probably has more important
things on his mind lately, and delivered
an unexpected upset by eliminating the
title holder.
Time looked ripe for a new name on the
Championship Trophy. Rick put his
best effort in the attempt to avenge the
2007 defeat and to change the
engraver's routine. The final against the
group winner Massimo was again open
with plenty of chances on both sides.
But it was the Italian once again to
emerge victorious from the battle as he
ground out a 1-0 win to claim his 4th
State title.
