The new State League flicked off in style on October's first Friday as
the club welcomed Luis Silva & his nephew Frank Jr back to action.
Luis' return was announced days before and, despite the absence of
regular attendees Rick Marques & Jim Taylor, Miguel & Massimo
willingly went on with the planned meeting. Then, the pleasant
presence of the young Silva allowed the 1st League Friday to take
place.
Frank, 10, tried his best in the group stage and finished strong as he
scored twice to the host, losing a tooth in the process. Despite the
0-0-3 record, it surely was a productive night for the youngest SCC,
who earned his first 6 points and a few bucks from the Tooth Fairy..
Lou was back in action for the first time after the XIII ASA New
England Championship of May 24th, and his Subbuteo was free
flowing as usual. His spot in the playoffs wasn't in doubt, so he went
for the upset that almost materialized in the Semifinal against his
cousin Miguel. But a last minute mistake denied him the possible 3-3
goal.
The night's final was a traditional Massimo-Miguel match-up. The two
State champions played well, going after each other without tactical
reserves. Lively but scoreless despite the numerous chances, the
match was resolved in Massimo's favor in the 2nd OT minute when
the Italian found a central corridor and finished with confidence.
