Christiana, Delaware
With their clubmate Andrea Gasparini
engaged in international competition in the
Southern hemisphere, Miguel & Massimo
drove South to Delaware for the annual ASA
Open. And history was made.
While Massimo's run for the title stopped at
the semifinals like in his previous three
participations in 2006, 2007 and 2009;
Miguel defeated the country's top two
ranked players and claimed the Delaware
title, as well as a brand new and massive
traveling trophy.
Miguel's win arrived almost a year after his
last ASA Open victory in the New England
AGI (smallest Open ever in CT), and almost
four years after the previous win at the
2007 FISTF IO Holiday Silver (largest event
ever in the US). That Holiday Silver was also
the last time a SCC player won outside New
England and that makes the Delaware title
even more special.
With four of the country's top 10 in the
players list and with two of them per group,
the semifinals Cranston-Marques and
Eyes-Conturso were perhaps expected. New
players however had their share of glory:
Evan Mortiboys and Adolfo Colindres qualified
to the KO stage; and Greece's John Rizos
followed the footsteps of other newcomers
before him and claimed the Christiana Cup.
The Eyes-Conturso match (2-1) was a tale
of two halves. The Italian dominated the
first half but failed to score. The Englishman
created many more chances after the break,
scored twice and escaped a couple of
dangers in pivotal moments of the second
half.
The Cranston-Marques match was a
scoreless mini-marathon that the Portuguese
claimed after shootouts. Miguel's comment
at the end, "Defense wins games" gives a
sense of the match's storyline that Cranston
controlled with constant but sterile
possession.
The Eyes-Marques final was close and
intense and Miguel was able to overcome
Paul and the tension by exploiting two
unusual situations. In the first, he scored
after a save by Paul's keeper that sent the
ball against Miguel's figure which was
positioned right in the middle of the box.
Miguel reacted quickly and scored with an
easy tap-in. In the second, the goal came
on an indirect free kick from the spot that
the ref awarded when Paul's keeper
touched the ball outside the goal area.
With Miguel's victory and Andrea's FISTF
title in Brazil, the SCC has perhaps become
the first club ever to have won two official
events in the same day and in two different
hemispheres.
