2011 ASA Holiday Silver
Sunday, December 4th in Ellicott City, MD

Ellicott City, MD
After four years, another Connecticut
player has lifted the Silver plate.
Massimo Conturso claimed his 2nd
Silver title after overcoming a small
field of 9 in a low profile edition of the
Holiday classic.
His first title arrived to complete the
famous Invasion of 2004, when the
SCC brought 10 players to Maryland
and swept the Sunday with 3 titles.
His second has been perhaps less
emphatic, especially if compared to the
66-player edition of 2007 that Miguel
Marques won four years ago. However,
this Holiday Silver takes a whole new
dimension when paired with Miguel's
recent win in Delaware. Considering
also the all-local ASA Connecticut Cup
in Wallingford, this year the SCC has
claimed all three North East Fall
classics. And that's a satisfaction that
goes beyond the attendance issues that
the ASA is experiencing nowadays.
The tournament was well played by
both Miguel and Massimo, the only two
SCC players attending the event. They
could have met in the final, but the
Portuguese ended his run in the
semifinals against Paul Eyes. In such a
restricted field, the winner would have
to go through oppositions like Eyes and
Daniel Cranston; and Massimo did just
that. He surely caught a few breaks,
but his positive approach allowed him
to stage comebacks in both the
semifinal and the final; and to win in
dramatic fashion against Cranston in
OT and Eyes in the last 10 seconds of
the game.
