Ellicott City, MD
The world wasn't set on fire, but the balance is positive
after the 4th annual Maryland Cup weekend. Connecticut
league leaders and club's most prolific players, Massimo
Conturso & Miguel Marques reached the 'final four' stages,
respectively in the Patapsco Challenge and the Maryland
Cup, and brought back home the North Atlantic Cup for
the 5th straight title.
On Saturday, the East Coast welcomed back ASA veteran,
Wayne Smith from California in a reedition of the 2003
WS Invitational held in Alexandria, Virginia. Wayne would
have eventually played against both Massimo & Miguel,
coming out with 2 losses and a 0-3 goal record.
Coincidentally, that was the same passive Conturso
received by Paul Eyes in their early morning's group stage
faceoff. Paul is recovering very well and his renewed
health was behind him in his run for the title. Too bad, he
found on his way Zach Walker, and the two gave life to
yet another memorable open & 'physical' match that the
US champion won 3-2 for his Maryland Cup poker.
Miguel was the most successful SCC player as he reached
the semifinals, but lost to Daniel Cranston 1-2, who
previously knocked out Maassimo in the Quarter Finals with
the same score.
On Sunday, it was the 2nd ASA Patapsco Challenge Cup
and Massimo was top seed as defending champion. While
his seeding kept him away from the 'group of death', the
knock-out stage was not exactly a walk in the park. It was
Daniel Cranston in the Quarter Finals, again. The two
played a copy of Saturday's game, but with reversed roles.
Massimo (Dan on Saturday) went up 2-0, only to see
Daniel (Massimo on Saturday) start playing hard and
getting very close to a deserved 2-2.
Miguel wasn't as lucky as his club mate, and Zach Walker
broke his resistance in the Round of 8 with a single goal at
2 minutes to time.
The Italian's luck (and gas) tank run empty in the
semifinals. Patrick was up for the challenge, but Conturso
didn't show up until 5 minutes to time when he had some
good chances. The Marylander qualified to the final with
merit.
In the championship game, Walker completed the sweep
by defeating MSC 'enfant terrible' 5-2.
