NEW ENGLAND FALL INTERLEAGUE
October 20, 2002
Farmington, CT
With the unusual record of 3-1-3 (17-5 on goals), Massimo
Conturso won the 2002 New England Fall Interleague. Actually,
othen than an interleague, this looked more like a Sunday
session of an incomplete CTSC. In fact, to the well known
absences of the Davidsons (at Foxboro for the MLS Final),
Michael Little (MA) and Yannis Kakavas (RI), 3 more players were
added to the sad list at the very last minute: NYC's Jimmy
Theodosiou and Manny Karagiannis (job related problems) and
our Miguel Marques. The Portuguese had got football feva and
left early to watch the classico Benfica-Porto (he played some
friendly matches). So, only 4 players were left to play this
interleague: CTSC's founders, Jim Taylor and Massimo Conturso,
and the Trinity College Dynamic Duo, Ryan Bak and James
Sullivan.
For James, this meeting has been his official debut as CTSC's
member # 7: what an incredible result for one of the smallest
US states! James has been introduced to the Game by Ryan just
a few weeks ago, but he's already showing a natural
predisposition for the flicking art. The competition has been the
strangest and most intense ever (41 goals in 13 games) in which
Jim Taylor gave an astonishing performance. Despite his shocking
start against Ryan (0-5), he first had his revenge over James
(5-0) and then completed his amazing Stage One with a
historical victory over Massimo (2-1, first win over the Italian in
75 games)!!! On the other hand, the once-called club's top
player had not an easy life: he won against Sullivan (4-0; 8-0),
lost the confrontation against Taylor (1-2; 0-0) and tied with
Ryan Bak in two very exciting matches (2-2; 1-1). He qualified
for the Final as runner-up (first time ever) with 9 points, well 5
below Bak. Ryan had an almost perfect tournament:
undefeated, 4 wins, 2 draws, 17-3 goals on Stage One-Two
(best attack, best defense), he had fun trying several
Astrobases and showed his great goalkeeping skills. Almost
perfect because in the Final, after a true battle, Massimo found
the net with a precise shot on the far post, when only 20
seconds were left to play!
