Oh boy, he's good!
We're talking about RYAN BAK, new member of CTSC, who had his
first apperance last night at club's home base in Farmington.
Resident in Suffield, CT, but currently student at the Trinity College of
Hartford, Ryan, 20, showed all his ability with his Hasbro's Arsenal (he's
a gunner..), despite almost 5 years of inactivity. His name is
well-known in the US Subbuteo Community, since he used to battle
(and often win!) against US Champion Gregg Deinhart. Zach Walker of
Minnesota Subbuteo League knew him and already asked for details:
Deinhart's throne--as well as Massimo's--is shaking!
Since all the CTSC's members were present, we decided to play last
night's Challenge Cup dividing the 6 players in two groups of 3. Ryan
was in Group B with Massimo and Jeff. He played 4 games (2-1-1; 5-2)
and made a great impression in the last one (0-0 Massimo): it was
group's last match, Massimo had 9 points, Ryan 6. Ryan's victory
would have forced Massimo to the playoffs. The Gunner--who may
have earned the nickname of "Nomo" for his habit of playing on one
leg sometimes--put everything on the pitch and pressed the Italian
down in the depth of his shooting area. Only a miraculous save in the
last 5 seconds gave Massimo the right to play the Final against the
"usual" Miguel.
The Portuguese tied twice and won twice in Group A, which had the
top moments in two games: Miguel-Eddie 3-1 and, especially, an epic
Eddie-Jim 3-3, with the talented--and always late--Mr. Taylor
constantly down, but always able to tie (the final 3-3 arrived at 4
seconds from the end).
The Final was a classic: Italy-Portugal.
Massimo scored an early goal, but Miguel was able to stay cool and tie
with a nice shot on the right post. The Italian kept the control of the
game and scored two more times for the final 3-1.
After the Cup, Club's co-founders--Massimo Conturso and Jim
Taylor--had a pleasant talk (until 1:00am!) about CTSC's incredible
progress and the situation of Subbuteo in USA and the rest of the
World. We have to say that we're a little concerned about the
American Subbuteo Association and its lack of presence in the national
context. As US club, it's our responsability, not only the promotion of
the game in our country, but of open and constructive discussion,
too. We have plenty of faith in ASA President, John Sarra's capacity
and we hope to hear from him soon--as well as to see ASA's web site
finally updated.
