XXIII CHALLENGE CUP
Farmington, January 10, 2003
In the coldest day of the Connecticut's winter, Miguel Marques freezes
Massimo Conturso at the last shoot-out and conquers his 2nd Challenge Cup
in the 23rd edition of the competition!

Without Taylor, Bak and Sullivan, the rest of the gang met tonight in the
frozen Massimo's basement for a one-night tournament. Everybody looked a
little rusty at the beginning, but the experience made the difference. So,
there was no big surprise in the Group Stage, althought Massimo's 4-0 over
Miguel and Jeff's 1-0 over Eddie are not exactly every day's scores.
The Young Davidson, in particular, seemed extremely inspired: he scored
twice in the Group Stage, won the Super Classico and claimed rank n.3.
The finals were two classics: the Davidson's Derby and Italy-Portugal. In both
the games, the destiny played against who did better in the group: Eddie
decided it was time to win a game and defeated his son 3-1, while the First
Round's timid version of the Portuguese gave space to a more aggressive
player. In fact, Miguel started the final with an attitude that disoriented the
Italian:
"what happened to that guy I buried 4-0", Massimo was asking to
himself!
Marques played an excellent game and battled the Italian on every ball. The
shoot-outs came as the logic conclusion of a very balanced match.
Conturso was 2-1 up after 3 shoots, but his missed the last two, while Miguel
scored twice and claimed his 2nd Challenge Cup.
For the Portuguese, tonight's victory has been the best way to celebrate his
new house in Wallingford, where he will defende his title next week.
