33rd CHALLENGE CUP
April 4, 2003
Luis Silva is the winner of the 33rd Challenge Cup, played tonight in
Wallingford, CT.
The true winner was actually the Winter Storm "Fernando", which is
traveling West to East and reminding us that Connecticut is not so far from
Alaska after all...
For the freezing rain and snow fallen in the valleys of our State, well 11 out
of 14 members decided to stay home--or traveling South like Eddie
Davidson.
Among the missing player, Jim Taylor, whose last appereance goes back to
February 23rd, and Massimo Conturso, corrupted for his own admission by a
good bottle of wine and a cozy blanket...
While Sergio Sensini stopped by to say hi, Rick Marques had to leave the
meeting during the first game for a little emergency. Three players kept
battling for a spot in the 33rd Challenge, with good chances for Luis and
Miguel "MIGS" Marques to get closer to Massimo's record of 27 titles.
The first round saw the two cousins with an equal number of points (4)
and goal differential: both 6-2, for the disappointment of third player, Frank
Silva (0-8).
The second stage opened like the first with a spectacular 2-2 between
Silva Jr and Marques Sr, followed by a clear victory for Miguel over Frank 5-0.
Since the weather conditions started to get worse, the last game
Luis-Frank was skipped since uninfluential for the second spot in the final. In
fact, with Miguel at 8 and Luis at 5, Franks's win would have been unuseful.
The Final was incredible with both contenders ravenous for the victory. In
an exciting sequence of scoring, the match ended 2-2, just like the two
previous. This time, no draw: the overtime came to break the absolute
balance and Luis Silva showed how serious are his intention when he
scored the Sudden Death goal for the final victory.
The young Silva claimed his second Challenge Cup title and passed Ryan Bak
for played games: 47 against Bak's 43, 6th in the club.
Miguel Marques can definitely be happy for his performance and his 250th
goal in club's competitons (now 251).
