In the night of his 2nd graduation as the State Champion, Massimo
Conturso enriched his personal titles collection by defeating Jim Taylor 2-0
and claiming the 39th Challenge Cup.
Played at Eddie's Place in Farmington without the Portuguese Clan, the
tournament had a knock-out stage with UEFA-style double-leg Semifinals,
followed by the single-leg Final.
Although Conturso-Taylor was the highly anticipated Challenge, the two
founders had no easy life against the Davidsons, who wanted to honor to
the best their inaugural hosting night. Jeff had his usual amazing
performance in the goal to keep the First Leg result low (1-2) and Jim still
touchable (for the UEFA rules, Jeff would have needed a 1-0 win to
qualify). Eddie iniatially suffered Massimo's pressing and went down 0-2 in
the early minutes. In the second half, the Italian tried to close the way
to the final, but the post and the goalie denied him the 3rd and 4th goal.
From a possible 4-0, the match passed to the final 2-1 score, when Eddie
found the net with a beautiful long shot from his own back line.
In the second leg, despite the adverse odds, father and son tried to earn
the passage to the final, but both Jim and Massimo scored early to ensure
the qualification. Eventually, Jeff earned a PK for Taylor's handball and
scored for the final 1-1 at the last second.
The 39th Challenge coincided with the 94th Founding Fathers Derby, first
final for Jim in 2003 (last appereance: September 22, 2002 vs. Massimo
0-2). Taylor tried to encore his only win against the Italian (Fall
Interleague of October 20, 2002, 2-1) by operating a constant but sterile
ball possession and pressure at midfield. Massimo replied with fast attacks
on the wings that paid off twice in the 2nd half for the final 2-0.
