Wallingford, Conn.
In the 3rd and final Team competition of the
season, the Italian contingent defeated the
Portuguese clan 9-2 to claim the III Olde
Oak Team Cup.
In 18 twenty-minute matches, Italy, in
which the mysterious "Giacomo Tailori" made
his first appearance, scored 20 goals and
received 7.
Sergio Sensini of Milan was outstanding by
winning 2, tying 3 (Miguel twice) and loosing
only one (Rick 1-2) and scored 7 goals out of
Italy's 20.
As in the best Mediterranean tradition, the
competition was full of true passion for the
Game and hot disputes on the pitches to
make it the most intense ever!
After all, this Portugal-Italy was the only
team cup that mattered..
Until the 4th Round, Italy's performance was
absolutely perfect with a 6-0 record and
12-2 on goals. Portugal's best player, Miguel
Marques, was forced on tie 4 times, while
Frank Silva allowed 9 goals for a 0-4 record.
Miguel's younger brother, Rick, tried hard to
break Massimo's winning string, but an
incredible DOUBLE-POST in Round 4 denied
him the well-deserved draw!
With a 6-0 score and 6 matches left,
Portugal was supposed to win them all to go
in OT. Tough result to achieve, but possible
at the 5th Round Half Time: the Marques
Brothers were up 1-0 respectively against
Giacomo Tailori and Sergio Sensini, while
Frank was shockingly defeating two-time
State Champion, Conturso, 1-0! Miguel and
Rick eventually brought home 2 wins, but
Silva gave up his fifth game in a row for a
honorable but decisive 1-2 loss.
In the 6th Round, Sergio scored 3 more to
Frank, while Massimo completed the feast by
defeating Miguel 2-0 and clinching his goal #
750 in club competitions.
