2003 A.S.A. NORTHEAST REGIONAL OPEN "New England Cup"
|
Sunday, February 23, 2003 In a nasty Connecticut's Winter day, 10 brave CTSC's players met today to battle in the 2nd Regional hosted by our club. They were divided into two groups of five. Then, there was the Knock-out Stage with Quarter Finals, Semifinals and Finals. Here is how it went.

In the Group A, Massimo finished on top as largely expected
with 10 points, followed by the surprising Luis Silva from
West Haven with 7. The Portuguese seemed to have
learned very fast the new way of playing and, after his first
Challenge Cup title, he was looking for a prestigious results
at the national level. In third position, we found the other
founding father, Jim Taylor with 6 points. Cinical as usual,
the Scot earned a spot in the quarter finals with one single
win in 4 games and +1 goal-differential. To remember and
tell his grandkids the 1-1 against the State Champion with a
second half absolutely perfect! At the bottom, Rick and
Eddie shared the points in the head-to-head, but Marques
qualified to the following Stage thanks to Jim Taylor's only
victory against Davidson Sr in the very last match. Eddie
needed points to pass, but Taylor had something more and
won 1-0.

The Group B was definitely less balanced than the "A", with less
defense-focused matches: 47 goals scored in 10 games, 4.7 a
game! The record went to Miguel Marques, who scored 18
goals and received 7, four of them in the crazy first round
match against his cousin Frank Silva. Frank was up 3-1, but
Miguel put himself together, came back and won 5-4.
Jeff Davidson had his moment of glory as well, when he took
advantage of Andy's inexperience and imposed himself 4-1. As a
new comer, Andy Elrick paid the inevitable tribute to the God
of Goals (against: 21), but his presence, as well as his
enthusiasm for the Game, was saluted with great joy by the
other club's members.
Frank, after his suicide against Miguel and the 0-4 with Ryan,
won the most important games: head-to-heads against Jeff and
Andy, with 5-0 on goals and qualification to the Quarter Finals.
Ryan Bak: 4-0-0, 15-0 on goals. Self explanatory!
