In the Second Stage of the competiton, matches became tougher.
Massimo passed over the young Davidson with a tennis-like 6-0, in which
Jeff played well the first 10 minutes, but eventually gave up the usual
mistakes in defense. The Portuguese derby between Miguel and Luis
was one of the finest Subbuteo action ever seen in Connecticut. Both
the players deserved to qualify to the Top Four for the show they put
on the pitch. The shoot-outs arrived as the only way to break the
balance. The mistake at the very last shot condamned Luis to the
Bottom Six. Jim Taylor finally showed some confidence in shooting other
than keeping the ball and imposed himself 2-0 over Frank Silva.
Notoriously defense-focused, Jim had astonishing performances since the
perfect second half against Massimo, with the partial score of 4-0! For
Ryan, once again, the numbers said it all. With his 3-0 over Rick, the
record became 5-0-0, 18-0 on goals: the best so far. After the quarter
finals, the players were divided once again in two parts: a. Top Four,
with the semifinals Massimo-Miguel and Ryan-Jim;
b. Bottom Six, with the Consolation Finals.
Eddie-Andy, both last in their groups, played the 9th place final and
Davidson Sr finally took a little revenge against his bad luck and left the
bottom rank to Elrick (2-0). To decide the other finals, the losers from
the quarter finals played a sort of playouts. Luis won 1-0 over Jeff and
clinched the 5th place final, leaving the young Davidson in the 7th place
final against Frank. In fact, Silva Sr lost one of the many Portuguese
derbies against his cousin Rick (2-1) and would eventually face Jeff in a
re-match of Group B.
In the semifinals, the largely anticipated final between Massimo and Ryan
became reality. While Ryan continued to keep his goal inviolated with his
1-0 over Jim, Massimo almost doubled his quarter finals score of 6-0. The
5-0 score over Miguel was a hell of a introduction for the Italian in the
Final match against Bak. Re-match of Friday's CT League Final,
Massimo-Ryan was watched by all the players in a sort of religious silence,
that was broken time to time by Massimo's exclamation of joy: three
times to be precise! The first goal was a chip under the far upper corner
from a difficult angle. The second was a perfect combination of timing,
precision and >

> power: a long shot from the extreme left,
that earned the applause of the other players.
In the 2nd half, the Italian closed the game
with close touch on a diagonal to the far post.
It certainly was the best game ever for
Massimo, who clinched his 2nd ASA title and
celebrated in the perfect way his 150th win in
club's official competition.
