Wallingford, Conn.
And so it ended.
The fantastic run that flicked off on February 22, 2002
finished 7 years, 9 months and 5 days later, on November
27th, in the same way it began.
He-who-must-be-challenged was Challenge Cup champion
for the 72nd and last time in a chilly night in Wallingford that
also served as a preparation for the away matches the team
will play next weekend in Maryland.
If Table Soccer had poetic justice, the other co-founder and
initial challenger, Jim Taylor should have lifted the trophy in
his last shot to Challenge Cup glory.
Jim warmed up methodically for several minutes; but the cold
that has finally arrived to Connecticut was an opponent too
hard to overcome. He wasn't as sharp as he could have been,
and the 100th Challenge was decided even before the first
shootout was flicked: Massimo & Miguel, who else, had
already booked their spot in the final by sharing points
throughout the tournament's two stages.
In Table Soccer, numbers talk. And the Italian-Portuguese
match-up has been the hottest in club's history. The two club
mates collected a total of 146 titles so far, including State,
ASA & FISTF: a record that is difficult to match anywhere.
The game was the perfect reflection of their different styles,
and produced an entertaining show with shots that barely
missed their target, all but one: The last of the match.
Massimo manoeuvred on the right, then opened to the left,
created a 2-to-1 numerical advantage and successfully
completed the play with a quick shot that wrapped up 100
exciting subbuteo evenings!
After 8 years, it is time to retire this classy but outdated
tournament. There is no longer a challenge to the club's most
experienced player, rather a fair & square competition that
deserves a reset in terms of statistics: And the new House Cup
will do just that.

November 2009: The Last Challenge.
July 9, 2002: Miguel's first Challenge win.
The shirt still fits: good sign.
