XLIV. Challenge Cup

XLV. Challenge Cup
July 24, 2004 in Farmington, CT
Of the 7 players in tonight's roster, only 3
actually played. Jim Taylor called out at the
last minute, while Jeff Davidson wasn't
feeling 100% and decided to call the night
after a few-minute match against Ostap
Mishtal. His classmates, Ostap & Pablo Lee,
followed him upstairs like loyal bodyguards.
Sergio Sensini, Eddie Davidson and
Massimo Conturso played the 45th
Challenge Cup, the 6th of the season.

Results:
EDDIE DAVIDSON 0-1 SERGIO SENSINI
MASSIMO CONTURSO
2-0 EDDIE DAVIDSON
(*)
SERGIO SENSINI 0-4 MASSIMO CONTURSO

(*) in this game, right before the half break,
with the result on 1-0 Massimo, Eddie scored
a controversial goal. Massimo called offside,
Sergio agreed, but Eddie made a good point.
A ball-in-hand trick followed and Eddie lost.
Eventually, our ASA VP, Jim
Taylor--contacted by phone--declared the
goal good.
To call it even, a new game was played:

MASSIMO CONTURSO 1-0 EDDIE DAVIDSON

Standings:
Massimo.................6 (2-0-0; 5-0)
Sergio.....................3 (1-1-0; 1-4)
Eddie......................0 (0-2-0; 0-2)

Sergio left for family duty
and Eddie took his place in the final.

Final:
Massimo C. 1-0 Eddie D.

Good open match played by the two senior
members. Eddie, at his first final of the
season, showed no fear and, after a post hit
by the Italian on shot from the side line,
started to press and almost scored on a
smart manouvre. Massimo couldn't get a
good defensive flick after a tick flick and
Davidson shot a rocket toward the goal that
found the opposition of both post and
super-giant EW goalkeeper! A few seconds
later, the ball was in Eddie's shooting area
and Massimo, despite having a tough angle,
scored on the far post the precious
match-point.

Challenge Cup winners after 45:
Massimo Conturso..............................34
Miguel Marques......................................6
Luis Silva.................................................4
Rick Marques..........................................1
In one of the most memorable cups ever,
Massimo Conturso brings home his 3rd
straight title by edging Miguel Marques 1-0 for
his personal 33rd Challenge Cup.
Without the Under 15, the competition
presented no weak links and the battles on
the pitches reflected this impression. Miguel
Marques managed to reach the final for a
better GD than his cousin Luis Silva, despite
not being as sharp as usual. Lou had chance
to claim the role of challenger, but a scoreless
draw with Jim Taylor in the last round denied
him that right.
Actually, Taylor had the same chance in the
same match as he could have jumped over
the two Portuguese with a win over Silva. Jim
would have faced Massimo in the 100th
Founding Father Derby, reached his first
Challenge of the season and had the chance
to win his first club title ever. But both Jim's
and Lou's defensive lines stayed strong for
the final 0-0 and Miguel's satisfaction.
In the Final, Massimo was pretty much in
control of the whole game, but found the net
only in the last 30 seconds of the match.
