Cup # 56
Conturso welcomed Miguel Marques in the Double Digit
Club as the Portuguese defeated the Italian after
shoot-outs to claim the 10th personal cup title. In a
session where Mike Eylward confirmed his progress,
Miguel's star brightened more than Massimo's and Rick's as
the older Marques went 2-for-2 against the fellow senior
members in group stage and kept his net untouched in
the final until the shoot-outs. In the not-quite-brilliant
Championship Match, both players had a few good
chances to claim the title (Marques hit the post in
overtime). But the real thrills arrived from the shooting
line lottery as both goalies committed mistakes on shots
from the far corners. While Massimo scored in the first
round, Miguel had the last laugh as he scored the 2-1
goal in the fifth, then saved on the Italian desperate
attempt to take him to the sudden death series.

Cup # 57
39th title for the Italian from Rome in a 4-hour, 3-player
session in Southern Connecticut. With 1/3 club around
the globe (Sensini in Europe, the Marques Brothers
cruising in Central America, the Davidsons in Louisiana),
Conturso faced the Silva Brothers in the traditional State
competition to reclaim the title lost against Miguel last
week. In Group Stage, Luis was able to tie the Italian on
a running flick with 0.01 left, but needed extra help from
his niece Kay to defeat his brother 2-1. With Frank up
1-0, Kay interfered with her father's goalkeeping in the
1-1 first half action. Frank's proclamations of revenge
followed!
In the Final, both players played well with a predominant
Italian possession, but Lou had the best chances in
overtime. Danger averted, Massimo shut-out the
Portuguese in 3 1/2 shoot-out rounds for the final
success.
Shoot-outs: (1) 1-0; (2) 2-0; (3) 2-0; (4) 3-0.
