Last time a SCC member won 10 Challenge
Cups in a row was October 3, 2002. That
night in Farmington, in the good ol'
basement where all began, the club
celebrated the return of Ryan Bak. Tonight,
it was Jeff Davidson to be welcomed back as
the youngster was in town for the holiday
weekend.
Bak would eventually become the most
talented among the challengers. "I can beat
him, I know I can", said Ryan after a 2-0 loss
to Conturso. He could indeed, and the two
gave life to one of the greatest rivalries in
American Subbuteo.
But the greatest of all, at least here in CT,
remains the Italian-Portuguese Derby,
Conturso vs. Miguel Marques. They faced
each other in 32 Challenge Cup finals, and a
hundred other times in ASA, FISTF & SCC
competitions. And it's not a coincidence
that Massimo's two 10-cup streaks got
clinched in games against Miguel.
Numbers may say another story, but
Massimo & Miguel have often specular paths
in tournaments, only to cross fingers in
semifinals & finals. This 88th Challenge Cup
wasn't any different as both players ended
the group stage with 10 points, and an
almost identical goal differential (+7 Miguel,
+6 Massimo), having squared off in a
scoreless match in the first round.
The final too was a reflection of this almost
perfect balance, which didn't translate
though into a midfield chess match, but into
an exciting game that saw as many
turnovers as shots on goal. Crossbars, posts,
saves kept the match within reach for both
sides with the Italian up 1-0, until a goal in
the final minutes closed the door to a
possible overtime for the final score of 2-0
Conturso.
