The Copa Marques is a Marques Family competition to be
played 4 times a year. The winner of a single
tournament is based on two matches with home/away
goal rule in UEFA-style.
MARQUES CUP # 1
Leg One: Saturday, March 12 in Meriden, CT
Rick Marques 1-1 Miguel Marques
Dramatic inaugural match for the 2005 Marques Cup: Rick takes the lead with
1:30 remaining in game, only for Miguel to get vital away goal with 10 seconds
remaining.
Leg Two: Saturday, March 19 in Wallingford, CT
Miguel Marques 0-1 Rick Marques
Prestigious win in the first edition of the competition for the youngest brother!
In the first half, Rick hits the post immediately followed by Miguel's counter
attack (and post!) in last couple of minutes. After the break, Rick tries to put
more pressure to get neccessary aggregate goal and hits the post twice, while
Miguel sticks with his game plan (tight defense and counter-attack) and almost
scores on a couple of occassions.  "Mr. Mourinho's" tactics backfires when
Miguel hits another post with 2 minutes remaining. The ball bounces outfield
for Rick's flick-in which results fatal for Marques Sr as Rick scores the match
point!

MARQUES CUP # 2
Leg One: Friday, June 3 in Wallingford, CT
Miguel Marques 1-0 Rick Marques
Leg Two: Sunday, July 3 in Meriden, CT
Rick Marques 1-2 Miguel Marques (OT)
Highlights: First half - Midfield battle to establish game. Rick has one shot on
goal (wide), while Miguel has center shot on goal but gets deflected over the
bar. Second half - Rick scores with 10 seconds remaining to even up the
aggregate score 1-1 and sends game to OT.
First OT half - Rick makes a costly defensive error and Miguel puts it in the back
of the net. Rick has an uphill battle now since he has to score not once but
twice to overcome aggregate score. Rick has a good chance to score at the
end of the half with a moving pass shot in the box but can't connect.
Second OT half -Miguel stays calm and shuts down Rick's chances of a double.
Miguel wins 2nd Marques Cup and regain the prestigious Trebble!

MARQUES CUP # 3
Leg One: Sunday, September 4 in Wallingford, CT
Miguel Marques 1-1 Rick Marques
Miguel has best opportunity of 1st half with open shot on goal but shoots
wide. In 2nd half, Rick manages to score a vital away-goal and takes the lead.
Miguel presses and scores equalizers after missing a couple of chances/good
saves. Overall, a good game. Aggregate after leg 1: 1-1 (advantage-Rick going
home with an away goal).
Leg Two: Saturday, September 24 in Meriden, CT
Rick Marques 1-1 (2-1) Miguel Marques
Another great final between the Marques Brothers.  The first half showed solid
play between both Benfica and Sporting.  Miguel, needing an away goal,
pushed extremely hard but to no avail as a few close chances couldn't find the
back of the net.  Benfica's defense proved crafty enough to hold back the
Lions until early in the second half when Liedson scored a beautiful goal to give
Sporting the lead.  Benfica would not go down without a fight.  Composed,
they built an attack that eventually lead to a spectacular strike and
Goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal.  Simao has sent the Eagles soaring with little time left in
regulation.  Overtime was frantic as both clubs wanted to avoid shootouts.
Benfica had 3 legitimate scoring chances that were denied by centimeters.
The home side's hearts were sinking with every missed opportunity.  Spirits
were lifted again when Sporting had a wide open shot from the corner that
sailed just wide off the crossbar.  On any other day that shot would have
found the back of the net. End of overtime.  Shootouts seemed a boring way
to end the game as it was such a well played final.  Benfica took the early 1-0
lead after connecting on the second shot.  Sporting then tied with a goal from
the center.  Then on the fifth shot from Benfica, luck happened to be on
Simao's side as his poorly hit shot trickled under Ricardo's arm.
2-1 final in Benfica's favor and the Cup will now be held in Rick's possession
until at least December when the competition will take place again.

MARQUES CUP # 4
Leg One: Wednesday, December 21 in Meriden, CT
Rick Marques 0-1 Miguel Marques
Miguel has 1-0 aggregate lead going into the final leg/fixture to be played at
home(Wallingford) later this month.
Overall, an uninspired subbuteo match, following the benfica 1 vs setubal 0
match where Nuno Gomes provided a late winner. Both players were happy to
see Benfica win but did not display any exciting subbuteo afterwards. Miguel
scores in 1st half due to Rick's turnover in his own box where Miguel capitalizes
immediately. Not many chances in the game, Miguel and Rick a had a couple of
shots on goal with saves but no real clear cut opportunities.
Leg Two: Thursday, December 29 in Wallingford, CT
Miguel Marques 1-0 Rick Marques
Miguel wins the 4th Marques Cup as the 1st year of the competition comes to
an end with the 2 brothers splitting the honours.
The best opportunity of the 1st half of the 2nd leg match was Miguel's as he
had a shot outside of the box saved by rick. In the 2nd half, Rick applied more
pressure and was able to get an open shot only for Miguel to save.  Rick had
more opportunities but never connected on his last flicks (moving ball
situations). As a result of an all-out attack and goalkeeper turnover by Rick,
Miguel's counterattack sealed the victory with a couple of seconds left in the
game.
