- Leg One: March 17th in Wallingford
Miguel Marques 0-0 Rick Marques
The 2006 edition flicks off with a scoreless tie in Wallingford before the St.Patrick's Challenge
Cup, that Miguel ends up winning for his 13th title. (+)
- Leg Two: March 29th in Meriden
Rick Marques 1-2 Miguel Marques
Miguel scores on long range shot in first half to take the lead with an important away goal,
but within a minute Rick quickly counters and scores with nice shot from the right wing.
In the 2nd half, Miguel gains control of midfield battle and ball possession and scores the
deserved goal in 2nd half. For the first time, the Cup stays in title holder's hands.
Cup #6, World Cup Edition
- Leg One: June 19th in Wallingford
Miguel Marques 1-0 Rick Marques
Miguel scores in 1st half due to poor defensive marking by Rick.
Second half is evenly matched as Rick has great shot only to be saved by Miguel save, but
Marques Sr. counter-attacks and hits the post.
- Leg Two: June 28th in Meriden
Rick Marques 1-2 Miguel Marques
Rick controls the game in the initial minutes, but Miguel takes the lead after a turnover in
Rick's half. Uphill battle now for Rick since he has to score 3 goals to overcome a temporary 0-
2 aggregate.
Rick reacts and pressures the older Marques several times but is unable to score in first half.
0-1 at the break.
2nd half: Miguel is confident in defending lead and decides to play counter attack.
Rick finally scores a deserved goal, but minutes later Miguel takes the definitive lead.
Overall, Rick controls the match and produced many chances to score, but Mig's away goal in
first half pretty much clinched the 6th Marques Cup title.
Cup #7
- Leg One: September 17th in Meriden
Rick Marques 0-0 Miguel Marques
Rick initiates offensive pressure in the opening minutes of the game, but fails to score while
Miguel also misses chances just before the break.
The 2nd half looks similar to the first: many scoring opportunities from both sides with both
keepers looking in good form.
The 0-0 aggregate score after 1st leg leaves it all open for return leg next month in
Wallingford.
- Leg Two: October 13th in Wallingford
Miguel Marques 0-1 (OT) Rick Marques
In their first 06/07 league night, the Marques Brothers go to overtime for the first time this
year. And for the first time in 2006, Rick takes home the prestigious family trophy.
The count is now 4-3 Miguel: Rick will go for a tie in the last event of the year in program in
the following weeks.
Cup #8
- Leg One: February 3, 2007 in Wallingford
Miguel Marques 3-1 Rick Marques
In a high scoring match, Miguel goes into half time with a 1-0 lead. Early in second half, Rick
ties it with a nice moving flick through the middle. But within seconds, Miguel takes back the
lead. He then scores again with a few seconds left to leave Rick in a big hole to climb out of
in the second leg to be played in Meriden.
- Leg Two: February 18, 2007 in Meriden
Rick Marques 1-0 Miguel Marques
Rick opens play with 5 attacking figures since he is down two goals on aggregate. He controls
possesion 75/25 in first half and it pays off with a stunning strike from the right side of the
pitch. The chances come plentiful in the second half as Miguel cannot get control the game.
Rick, needing one more goal to win, threw everything he had at his brother but could not
find the back of the net. Final Score 1-0. Miguel wins Cup back after the 3-1 victory on home
field.
